What is Coronavirus?

It is a hella big family of viruses through which humans and animals are infected. It mainly infects the respiratory system. The coronavirus has the ability to transform itself into different strains which is one of the reasons why scientists still struggle to find the right medicine for it. The coronavirus was already discovered in the 1950s. The current COVID-19 is an emerged version of the coronavirus. Hence, I would say that COVID-19 is a subset of coronavirus.

The symptoms of this disease are having fever, breathing difficulty, dry cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite. Not all symptoms appear to the same person. Depending on each individual’s body type some symptoms appear. People with diabetics, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory problems, pregnant women and old people are easily prone to the virus.

How did it start?

It is said that in December 2019 someone from the Huanan seafood market in Wuhan, China was infected with corona from an animal. It initially spread in China and during early 2020 the whole globe became a victim of this virus. The Guardian also says that before corona spread to humans, pangolins (similar to an anteater) was the staging post. This pandemic has killed 211,768 human beings up to date. 3,073,603 are infected by the virus and 924,643 have recovered with special care.

Is it contagious?

YES, it is contagious. This disease is spread when an infected person expels a droplet when speaking, sneezing or coughing. This droplet is infected and is heavier than air. Therefore, it doesn’t spread through the air. People become victims of COVID-19 if they breathe the infected droplets or touch an infected person’s hands or their belongings without proper safety measures. According to WHO common objects like tables, doorknobs, taps, handles, handrails etc. can carry the infected droplets too. When a person touches these objects and touches his/her naked eye, mouth or nose he/she can be infected. This shows the severity of the virus.

How can you protect yourself from the virus?

To protect yourself from the pandemic it is essential to follow a few safety measures.

  • Social distancing –   It is advised to maintain a 1-meter distance between two individuals.
  • Wear masks and gloves whenever you step out of your house.
